Pediatric Hematology (blood)/Oncology (cancer)

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore cares for infants and children with hematologic and malignant disease, including anemias, white cell and platelet disorders, coagulation disorders, as well as leukemia and solid tumors. Blood counts, bone marrow aspirates and spinal fluid examinations are performed in the pediatric laboratory located within the clinic. The division is available around the clock for emergency consultation.

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology is supported by The Herman & Walter Samuelson Children's Hospital at Sinai, one of the most comprehensive pediatrics departments found in a community hospital, including numerous specialists and a 10-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

The Alfred I. Coplan Pediatric Hematology Oncology Outpatient Center has opened at the Herman & Walter Samuelson Children's Hospital, providing a new and improved space for patients and families. The opening of the larger, brighter clinic is part of a larger ongoing construction project to expand and renovate the current inpatient and outpatient pediatric areas of the children' s hospital.

"Our new clinic embraces our patient/family centered approach to patient care by providing better exam and infusion facilities for our patients and their accompanying family members," said Joseph Wiley, M.D., Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, The Herman & Walter Samuelson Children's Hospital at Sinai. "The five exam rooms are larger and more patient centric, and equipped with technology to support the electronic health record. The five infusion bays are private, yet monitored in a new nursing station configuration. The design and layout are a huge improvement for the staff and patients."

The design of the space allows for improved information access of the patient chart while providing a comforting, yet bright, child/adolescent friendly environment. The private family conference room is located next to the clinic and social worker offices which provide a space for learning resources as well as private family meetings.

The clinic moved from its ground floor location to a newly created space near the main hospital entrance, providing easier access and proximity to other hospital services as well as the Alvin & Lois Lapidus Cancer Institute, home to the outpatient infusion center. Both areas will also share the same laboratory and pharmacy.

"We are proud to have such a modern, beautiful space which gives us enhanced patient care opportunities for our children and young adults," said Wiley. "This project would not have been possible without the level of philanthropic contributions from our generous donors."

This facility supports the very heart of a family-centered care program where the family is recognized as the constant in a child's life. For this reason, family-centered care is built on partnerships between families and health professionals during and after a child is treated for a diagnosed illness. Most importantly, family centered care improves and enhances clinical outcomes for children with special needs and provides more support for their families as they deal with the challenges of raising a chronically ill child.

We also offer our patients the Bridge Clinic-- a clinic for pediatric cancer survivors 2 or more years off therapy. The clinic is run by Jason Fixler, M.D. and Joseph Wiley, M.D. but led by Revonda Mosher, C.R.N.P. Revonda is a nurse practitioner and one of the leading experts in the country on late effects of cancer therapy in survivors with more than 15 years experience in the field. Appointments can be made by calling 410-601-5864.
