The Fourth Annual Hip Joint Course: Treatments for Young Patients with Hip Arthritis will be held August 27–29, 2010, at the Marriott Waterfront Hotel in downtown Baltimore. The course will focus on arthroscopy, impingement, the anterior approach, resurfacing, and MIS hip.

LifeBridge Health designates this educational activity for a maximum of 21 AMA PR Category I Credit(s)TM. This course also meets the basic criteria of the Maryland Board of Physical Therapy Examiners for 2.1 CEU credit hours. Physicians and allied health professionals should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
The conference will bring together the world leaders in hip joint preservation and reconstruction for a combination of didactic presentations, focused discussions, and surgical demonstrations. The goal is to identify, outline, and discuss the current state of knowledge in the clinical and basic sciences as they pertain to the diagnosis and treatment of hip arthritis in young patients. The intended audience includes orthopedic surgeons at all levels of training and interested parties from science and industry.
New surgical approaches to the hip will be taught, including the anterior approach, in both didactic and hands-on cadaver sessions. The pathomechanics, patient selection, and treatment options for femoroacetabular impingement will be discussed. A comprehensive range of standard and resurfacing hip arthroplasty options will be presented, with a focus on the current principles of patient and implant selection, surgical techniques, and avoiding complications. Comparisons will be made between current generation metal-on-polyethylene and alternate bearing surfaces. Pertinent basic science issues will be presented and discussed including tribology, retrieval analyses, pathology, and wear debris exposure and related concerns. Future directions, such as cementless resurfacing fixation, short stems for total hip arthroplasty, and the evolution of bearing surfaces will also be addressed.
Additionally, afternoon cadaver lab sessions will be offered featuring expert-led, hands-on training in: arthroscopic and open treatment of impingement, techniques for hip resurfacing and minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty, and surgical approaches to the hip.
